"Walk with a Doc": The Science Behind the Art of Acupuncture

Spend your lunch hour with Dr. Grace Rollins, DAc at the Penn Medicine-Doylestown lecture series, "Walk with a Doc," on Weds February 18th from 12-12:30.

Walk with a Doc is a national "movement" started in 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Frustrated with his inability to effect behavior change in the clinical setting, Dr. Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him in a local park on a spring Saturday morning. To his surprise, many patients and community members showed up, energized and ready to move.

Now an official 501(c)3 nonprofit, Walk with a Doc inspires local chapters, including our own here at Penn Medicine-Doylestown Hospital. At a typical event, a healthcare provider gives a brief presentation to the public on a health topic, and then leads participants on a walk. Did you know that walking just 30 minutes per day can significantly reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes?

For Dr. Grace's talk, she will give a brief overview of "The Science Behind the Ancient Art of Acupuncture." Participants will learn what scientific research says regarding the key mechanisms of acupuncture, and why such a surprisingly simple procedure has been shown to be beneficial for diverse health conditions including various types of pain, migraine and headache, nausea, fertility, allergies, and more.

Following the 10 minute talk there will be a Q&A, and then participants will "move with a doc" by performing a few simple, health-promoting Chinese Qi Gong exercises to promote circulation, mobility and vitality.

The event will take place at the Doylestown Community Recreation Center, 425 Wells Rd., Doylestown, PA— near Central Park and the Kids Castle.
